What is the LANTITE?

The Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students, in plain terms. Every fact here comes from ACER's own documents.

Who sets it

ACER, the Australian Council for Educational Research, publishes the test's assessment framework and runs its official website.

ACER says the test "assesses personal literacy and numeracy skills in contemporary Australian contexts" (ACER, Skills and Content Guide (revised 2023), p. 2).

Two tests

There's a literacy test and a numeracy test. Each one allows 120 minutes (ACER, Test-taking strategy).

Literacy is one section of 65 questions. Numeracy has two sections: 52 questions, then 13. Once you start the second numeracy section, you can't go back to the first (ACER, Test-taking strategy).

Each test also includes 5 trial questions that don't count towards your result (ACER, Assessment Framework (2024), p. 30).

Calculators

In numeracy, an on-screen calculator is available for 75 to 85% of the questions and not allowed for 15 to 25% (ACER, Assessment Framework (2024), p. 23).

How you answer

There are two kinds of question. Selected response is multiple choice, "usually with four response options", or a set of statements you mark one by one, for example true or false.

Constructed response means typing the answer: the correct spelling of a misspelt word in literacy, or a number in numeracy (ACER, Assessment Framework (2024), p. 30).

Where the questions are set

Questions in both tests are set in three kinds of situation (ACER, Assessment Framework (2024), pp. 27-28):

  • Personal and community life: 45 to 55%
  • Schools and teaching: 30 to 40%
  • Further education and professional learning: 10 to 20%

Dates, fees and booking

These change from year to year, so we don't copy them here. ACER's test website has the current test windows, fees and registration.

What each test covers

There's a guide to each one: the literacy test and the numeracy test.

Want to try some questions? We have free numeracy practice questions and literacy practice questions with worked answers. ACER also publishes official practice material, and it's worth doing.
