The LANTITE literacy test
How the literacy test splits between reading and the technical skills of writing, and what each part assesses, from ACER's framework.
One section
The literacy test is one section of 65 questions in 120 minutes (ACER, Test-taking strategy).
Reading and writing skills
In ACER's words: "Two-thirds of the literacy test assesses reading and one-third technical skills of writing." (ACER, Assessment Framework (2024), p. 9)
Reading texts
Reading questions come in units: one text and several questions about it (ACER, Skills and Content Guide (revised 2023), p. 3). The texts come in three formats (ACER, Assessment Framework (2024), p. 10, Table 1):
- Continuous text, written in sentences and paragraphs: 45 to 65%
- Non-continuous text, like tables, forms and charts: 25 to 35%
- Mixed text, which combines the two: 10 to 20%
Reading processes
Each reading question targets one process (ACER, Assessment Framework (2024), p. 16, Table 6):
- Access and identify: 35 to 45%. Find information, sometimes meeting several conditions, among competing information.
- Integrate and interpret: 40 to 50%. Work out the main idea, how parts relate, what a word means in context, or what the text implies.
- Evaluate and reflect: 10 to 20%. Judge the text against outside knowledge, and spot features, audience fit or inconsistencies.
Technical skills of writing
These questions cover four areas (ACER, Assessment Framework (2024), pp. 17-18, Tables 8-9):
- Syntax and grammar, including punctuation: 20 to 30%
- Spelling: 20 to 30%
- Word usage: 20 to 30%
- Text organisation: 20 to 30%
They're multiple choice or ask you to type a single word (ACER, Skills and Content Guide (revised 2023), p. 6).
